In a one-on-one with Lifestyle Living, owner and Interior Designer, Heuristic Interiors, Prashant Makkar, offers some fresh perspectives on inner spaces. LL: While designing an interior, how much do you have to compromise on aesthetics over functionality?
PM: | strongly believe that form follows function; however, while examining and analysing the prominence of functionality and aesthetics in design, we observe that it is the setting. background, situation or a circumstance that determines which of the two takes a dominant role in a particular case. But, in the larger picture, both need to compliment and equalise each other. Having said this, I would like to add that personally, I like to coat functionality of a solution as aesthetically as possible.
LL: How much do you involve your client in the designing process?
PM: 1 think that getting to know the client well enough to know his likes, dislikes wants and needs, is an integral part of commencing the design process. I like to involve my client to a certain stage, that is, when I’m formulating the schematic designs, layouts and initial presentation of a particular project.
Having said this, I expect my client to have that faith in me, that I can deliver and cater to their needs without much interference from their sides. However, a positive suggestion based on their needs or requirements is always appreciated,
LL: What difficulties do you face in your profession?
PM: 1 think every phase of design has its own share of problems or rather hurdles that one has to overcome. However, the most common problems I’ve faced in the span of my career, are the ones dealing with labour, long credit period, and if you don’t mind me saying so, sometimes an overbearing and interfering client; because sometimes, what happens is that a client with no knowledge of aesthetic and functionality sense tries to interject at every opportunity available.
LL: What are your future plans?
PM: Well, my future plans definitely involve the expansion of the brand and strengthening the name of the company.
